I can feel Autumn. It’s just around the corner. Here in Haugesund on the west coast of Norway we have only a brief summer. I think I can count the days of the golden trio; sun, warmth and stillness, on just one hand. That isn’t to say it’s dreary. Quite the opposite. From my garden I can smell the ocean, I see the salty air leave its mark on our windowpanes, rust any metals we leave outside for just an afternoon, and keep the grass green. In fact, whilst most of Europe has suffered 30 plus degrees for weeks on end, the gulf has kept us cool. The weather here can be tough, but the skies are ever-changing and the rain can soak you through – a good reminder of how temporary and connected life is. I find a peace in this wilderness, and although I live on the edge of town, I feel so close to nature.

It seems fitting that I start this venture with ramblings on the weather. The weather is a topical safe haven for new conversations. Veering far from this safe path is a little scary but of course we must! I have started this site, venture, newsletter, some undefinable musings for no better reason than to try a more creative act then keeping things in my head. My hope is that my proclivity to overthink will transcend into creativity in writing, in drawing, in something more than just thinking. Secondly, but equally as important, is that I think this may be the anecdote to a simmering rage, and burdensome anxiety towards artificial intelligence. The way it imbues my workday, mutes my voice, and robs me of the freedom to create.

What better anecdote than finding a place to find peace. To find peace in the wild and beautiful. I hope that I can find a way to encourage a non-judgemental space for creative thinking, wonderment, and to remember how awe-inspiring this beautiful wild world can be. Sometimes I’ll write biographically, other times, scientifically, out of wonderment - poetically, and always out of curiosity. Sometimes I might paint, but most times I won’t. I will try to write unapologetically, often just a first draft. I don’t want to think too much, I want it to be a place to leave my thinking on the page and not reiterate, and redraft. I want a place to share things which excite me, which set me free from the pains of the world, and make me feel lighter.

I can’t profess to be any good at being creative, but I also don’t think you can judge creativity. If the process results in something, out of seemingly nothing, and it made me feel, then that’s good enough. I think my hope is that in being more open to express my love for this world, I will remember to remain in love with it.
